If you want to enjoy the grandeur of the Victorian age or the
excitement of the California gold rush, install an antique sink in your
kitchen.
You can reminisce on past times while enjoying dinner and having friends
over. However, finding a real antique or vintage kitchen sink is not
easy. Any historical kitchen sink you are lucky enough to find is likely
to have developed cracks or chinks, and it may not have the necessary
accessories, like a faucet, to make it workable in today’s kitchen.
Kitchen sinks of the mid 19th or early 20th century were made of marble,
porcelain, fireclay, or copper and were generally imported from France
or Italy. Since they are difficult to find in usable condition, a good
one can be quite expensive.
As an example, a classic 1900 marble sink manufactured in Chicago by the
Wolff Manufacturing Company for sale by Vintage Plumbing, a Los
Angeles-based company, is priced at $8,900. It has a 4-foot tall heavy
French plate beveled-mirror back splash, original mixer hardware,
complete supply and drain hardware, and nickel-plated brass cabriole
legs. A carved soap dish in the slab drains into the basin.
According to Vintage Plumbing, kitchen sinks from the 1910s, ‘20s, and
‘30s are very popular among their customers, and they keep a fairly good
stock of them on hand. The store also stocks antique farmhouse kitchen
sinks manufactured by Kohler’s Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company
in addition to those made by Wolff. However, the store confirms that
it’s difficult to find vintage sinks in good condition. |
