If all goes as planned, it can take about eight weeks to renovate your kitchen. But Murphy's Law states that if anything can go wrong, it will, so be prepared!

Revitalizing a kitchen requires taking into account the extent of the project, the age of the kitchen, and the condition of the house. The older the house, the more likely it is that you will encounter unexpected problems while remodeling. However, even a new home might offer a surprise or two. What can you expect from your remodeling project? How can you best plan ahead to avoid problems?

Before starting, check with your city government to find out if you need a building permit.

The Demolition

This is not a fun job, but you can save money by tearing it down yourself. Be prepared for unexpected scares. You might find rotten floorboards from a leak you didn’t know you had, or maybe even something worse. You might find that your wiring is not up to code. The good news is that whatever you find, you can fix it now rather than later. Be sure to properly collect and dispose of your waste. This may be an additional expense you’ll want to take into account.

Preparation for Remodeling

Here again, you can save a lot of money by putting up drywall and painting yourself. If wiring or pipes need repair or replacing, you might have to contract with a professional plumber or electrician. Check your building code permit for requirements.

Remodeling

Before installation or use, check appliances for any damage that might have occurred during transportation from the store to your home. Also check for completeness of parts and instructions for all products. Padded equipment should be used when moving and delivering appliances and other items. Wooden clamps should be used for your cabinets. If you decide to install your appliances or cabinets yourself, you should read home improvement manuals before making any major installation decisions. With regard to flooring, you should have sheet vinyl installed before your cabinets arrive, but you should have wood or tile laid after your cabinets have been installed. This will save on labor costs.

Completion

Now you’re ready for the counter tops, sinks, faucets, lights, and fixtures, along with details such as decorative hardware, light covers, switch plates, and trim. This part is fun if you don’t rush. Relax and keep your focus and you’ll pick out the items that will set off your kitchen just right. These final touches will have a big impact on the look and feel of your kitchen and express your personal taste and preferences.
